About our Instructor:
Since he was a child, Bill has always been fascinated in the Martial Arts. Black Belt Magazine at the time was still trying to get people interested in the Martial Arts and would allow one to write to instructors that were featured in the magazine. Bill wrote to such people as Chuck Norris, Stephen K. Hayes, etc. To his amazement he received letters from them, encouraging him to follow his dreams of becoming a Martial Artist himself.
“The highlight of those years was when I received an autographed picture addressed to me from Mr. Norris stating ‘Keep Kick’n’”
In 1979 Bill studied Tae Kwan Do under Sensei Rick Miteaz. His instructor was such big competitions advocate that he trained Bill to not only to defend himself, but, had to compete in many competitions himself.
Bill enjoyed competing, but felt there was more for him to learn. So in 1981 Bill met his next instructor; an American Kenpo practitioner, Joe McLean (*now Joe Martin to honor his mother’s memory*). Bill was put under a lot intense training in this school because he had challenged Sifu McLean to make him an instructor in his absence.
“Each Belt Level was an adventure,” Bill recalls. “Not only did I have to learn the techniques, kata, etc.; but I had to be able to instruct lower belt individuals before I was allowed to test. It was great!”
Soon after that, Sifu Mclean and close friend Shihan Larry Kraxberger heard about the personal student of James M. Mitose (The Grandmaster of Kosho Shorei Ryu Kenpo), Hanshi Bruce Juchnik was willing to take new students. Sifu Mclean took Bill in his beat up VW Bug and they met Hanshi Juchnik to study Kosho.
In 1983 Bill received his Black Belt in American Kenpo and enlisted in the United States Army. Bill continued to study various martial arts to include but not limited to, under a personal student of famed Stephen K. Hayes (Ninjitsu), Aikido under Juan Borja from Saipan and Military Combatives.
Bill didn’t forget his roots of Kenpo and in 1986 tested under Hanshi Juchnik and was awarded the rank of Yudansha. It was at this time that Bill decided that Martial Arts was his life and wanted more for himself and his students, so he founded the art of Shizen Do Kenpo Jitsu.
“Sifu McLean told me, ‘You once challenged me, now I challenge you, make an impact in the Martial Arts.’ So I revamped my Kenpo to be a lot more natural in movements, incorporated the other Arts that I studied, and added a great emphasis on Christianity to it.” Thus was the beginning of Shizen Do Kenpo Jitsu.
